Refinishing existing hardwood stairs
Stairs are sanded mostly by hand because floor machines cannot reach each tread and nosing. Treads and rails are then stained to match your floors and sealed with the same finish.
Converting carpeted stairs to hardwood
Under stair carpet there is often construction-grade wood that was never meant to be seen. The cleanest result usually comes from installing new hardwood treads, and often new risers, rather than trying to refinish what is underneath.
White painted risers with stained oak treads are a popular combination because they brighten the staircase and hide scuffs less than you might expect.

How long does it take?
Refinishing typically takes one to three days depending on finish drying time. A carpet-to-hardwood conversion usually takes a few days.
Can we use the stairs during the work?
Access is limited while finish dries. We talk through the schedule for your home ahead of time, especially if the stairs are the only way upstairs.
